Our first trip to Catalina Island on the sailboat!

captain scottWe grabbed some brave friends, checked the weather, loaded up the ice chest with emergency steak and some beer and we headed out on a bearing of 218 degrees (more or less) towards Two Harbors on Catalina Island.  Leaving around 10:00 a.m., it’s not very windy so we motored a fair distance before the wind picked up.

We pulled up to our mooring ball at about 3:30 p.m., congratulated ourselves on our success and took a shore boat straight to the bar.  Buffalo Milk and Pain Killers all around.  After walking it off, we headed over to the beach for some dinner on the sand and by the time we were done, WE WERE DONE!  A quick ride back to the boat, a nightcap or two and we were ready for bed.

Here’s were it gets interesting.  Just as we were about to fall asleep, our friend Sandy gives a quick gasp and then screams, “There’s a fish in my bed!”  I hopped out of the V-berth to see what the commotion was and sure enough, a rather large flying fish had jumped into the cabin through the partially closed hatch!  Man do those things smell!  We laughed until we cried and then passed out from all the high comedy.

The return trip was pretty mellow, motoring for longer than we wanted to, but as we entered the harbor, we heard the Coast Guard on the radio saying the bridge was shut down to traffic.  We needed to get past the bridge to get to our slip.  It turned out someone had crawled up the beams and was holding out for a few hours before they got him down.  An hour and a half later we were back in our slip and ready to be on dry land.

First trip to Catalina Island a huge success!
